Introduction

My name is Terence.

For the past several years, I've worked at the intersection of communities, systems and institutions to further innovation towards Canadian democratic renewal; global peace and security; and the safeguarding of human rights.

My experiences and impact range from boards, strategic advice and thought leadership to foreign policy development and implementation. I'm also a public speaker and consultant for various initiatives.

Democratic renewal in Canada

I'm on the journey to democratic innovation. As the Advocacy Chair at Apathy is Boring's Board of Directors, I've come across so many ideas for re-engaging Canadians, especially young voters, who are losing trust in their institutions day by day. As someone born in a non-democratic country and moving to Canada at the age of 10, I've also seen where we can do more - but I first saw how much we've already done in democracy - and this is what gives me hope. From working within Canadian democratic institutions to advocating for change from the outside, in all of my engagements, I've sought to rebuild receptive institutions and renew the spirit of democracy altogether.

Global peace and security

Drawing from my experiences in foreign affairs (Global Affairs Canada) and Canadian foreign policy in fragile and conflict-affected states/situations, including on Afghanistan, Russia-Ukraine, and parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, I bear a profound understanding of the consequences of conflict, from displacement to the death of innocent civilians.

In my experiences both within and outside of government, I have contributed to futurist peace prospects that deter the roots of conflict rather than catching up with its effects, such as the UN Women, Peace and Security and Youth, Peace and Security Agendas. My work has sought to recognize the intersectionality of gender and generation in contributing to peaceful and equitable futures.

Safeguarding human rights

Fulfilling basic needs and human rights are vital to democratic and peaceful futures in the world. From working on the increasing restrictions on women's rights in Afghanistan to the disproportionate impacts of climate change on developing nations, I've often been tasked with searching for innovative ways to securing the fundamental human rights and basic needs of people trapped in vicious cycles of violence and poverty. I've also worked on systemic barriers to the complete fulfilment of Canadians' rights and needs, right here at home -through initiatives with organizations like Taking IT Global, the Canadian Council for Youth Prosperity, YouthREX, First Work, and Together|Ensemble.
